The information on this page provides brief answers to our most popular questions! For more detailed information, please visit the YAAL Policies page.
My student is on the waitlist, how like is it they will move up?
It is hard to predict; however, we have been able to work through our waitlist a number of times!
You are always welcome to email us and ask if there has been any movement.
Why do you limit the number of sign-ups for a program?
We look at the number of roles available and consider the size of our space. We try to include people as much as possible.
The larger a cast gets, the less opportunity everyone has to be involved in the production.
When do auditions take place?
Tuition-based mainstages & workshops will hold auditions on the first day.
Teen Program usually holds auditions in May, with sign-ups opening in January/February.
What can be expected during auditions?
Auditions are not meant to be stressful, but rather, an opportunity to see everyone’s strengths!
Musicals ask students to prepare 60 seconds of a song they love to sing, and send a YouTube karaoke link to sing with. Additionally, students will learn and perform a group dance.
Musicals & Plays may assess acting skills in a variety of ways, including reading from the script, playing theatre games, or participating in improv activities.
Will students need to be at every rehearsal?
Yes, the expectation is that students attend all of the rehearsal dates/times and performances listed.
Can you still sign up if there are conflicts?
Yes, if the conflict(s) are minimal. We ask that all conflicts be communicated on the first day so the team can create an accurate rehearsal schedule.
If the conflicts require a student to miss significant rehearsal time or any performances, it may be best to wait for a program that better fits in their schedule.
What about a conflict on audition day?
This can be tricky because the crew will not get to see your student before casting them, but tuition-based programs will cast everyone in a role, even if they miss the audition!
If you have specific questions, please email info@yaal.org to let us know which program you are interested in, and more about your student.
For the Teen Program, students must audition to be considered. Please email to see if other arrangements can be made if you cannot attend the scheduled audition day(s).
What should students wear?
Be comfortable! Wear clothes for movement, make sure you are covered appropriately, and wear close-toed shoes. Tennis shoes work great! This holds true for auditions and rehearsals!
What are “blacks”?
“Blacks” are a theatre term used to describe a layer of solid color clothing (typically black) worn underneath costumes. Some students will wear white, depending on their costume.
Students will bring a set of “blacks” to wear, and an email with more information will be sent closer to tech.
Do students bring a lunch and/or snack?
Rehearsals that run 9 am-3 pm: students bring a peanut-free lunch & snack.
Rehearsals that run half days or in the evening: students can bring a peanut-free snack, if they like.
All students need to bring a refillable water bottle!
How does YAAL handle weather cancellations?
YAAL will email families, and post on social media in the event of a cancellation or delayed start.
YAAL will notify at least 2 hours before students are scheduled to arrive.
In the event of an unexpected wind storm or snow squall, please use your judgement as to the safety of travel. We may not be able to communicate right away, but please assume you will be excused.
Please note: YAAL does not always follow LPS. Rescheduling rehearsal is difficult, so we try to hold rehearsal as long as it is safe to do so.
I did not get an email with my tickets, what should I do?
You can email info@yaal.org, and we will look for your order and re-send it.
I lost my email with the tickets; can I still get in?
Yes! We can search for tickets by name at the performance.
Can I purchase tickets at the door?
This is not recommended. We will accept walk-in ticket sales, but cannot guarantee availability.
After performances sell out, we meet building occupancy and cannot add more seating.
Why do you limit workshop showcase tickets?
Building occupancy sets our seating availability. When all seats are reserved, we cannot add more.
We want each student to have friendly faces in the audience, so we divide the tickets equally based on number of students and number of seats available.
Can I exchange my tickets or get a refund?
All ticket sales are final! We are happy to try to exchange tickets for another day/time.
Send an email to info@yaal.org, and we will do our best to exchange your tickets for you.
Can I cancel a registration and receive a refund?
Refunds are not guaranteed. Many items and materials have already been paid for and it is difficult to always provide a full refund.
Cancellation requests should be emailed to info@yaal.org at least 2 weeks before the start date for a full refund of tuition.
